Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

At The Cumberland Recreation Institute
Thursday, June 26

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Seun’s father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was Nigeria’s most beloved popular musician and most acerbic social critic until his death in 1997. Seun began his musical career at nine years of age opening for his father with Egypt 80. Keeping his father's spirit alive Seun still performs with the same band, a power-house of explosive dance grooves, the hookiest basslines, big spectacle and politicised energy. Much of the magic of their live shows derives from the energetic exchange between at least 18 musicians and dancers. It’s a full-on, funk sound that’ll take you to the edge and back.

Mother Mother

At The Waverley Hotel in Cumberland
Thursday, June 19

Mother Mother

Musically, this playful pop quintet from Vancouver is quite sharp. Their sound rests somewhere between crazy country folk and synth-infused indie rock, creating a refreshing original sound. With infectious stage chemistry and high energy, this group brings an element of spontaneity and abandon to each live performance. Vital to Mother Mother's success is its lyrics, which describes in a wry, observational fashion the beautiful and beastly behavior of a socially inept world.
